Using your plan

What can I actually spend this on?

Updated September 2026 · 5 min read

The money in an NDIS plan is split into budgets. The three main ones are Core Supports, Capacity Building and Capital Supports, and each has its own rules. Not every plan has all three. Your plan shows which ones you have and how much is in each.

One rule sits over everything below: the NDIS only pays for a support if it's related to your disability and meets all of the reasonable and necessary criteria. The examples below are what's typically included, not a promise that something will be funded for you.

Core Supports: everyday life

For everyday activities and getting involved in your community. This is the most flexible budget: you can usually spend the total across these four categories as you need.

Capacity Building: building skills

For building skills and independence, so you may need less support later. This money is set for each category, so you can't move it from one category to another. Common categories include:

Capital Supports: bigger items

For higher-cost, one-off things. These usually need quotes or assessments first, and the money is set for a specific item or change.

What usually isn't covered

This is where people most often get caught out, sometimes by a provider saying "the NDIS will cover it". Before you pay for something, check.

Not sure about something? Check the NDIS's lists of what is and isn't an NDIS support, or ask your planner, Local Area Coordinator or plan manager before you pay. If NDIS funding is spent on something that isn't an NDIS support, the NDIS may ask for it to be paid back.
